Course content
|
Introduction to the study of the subject. Scientific research (methodology, scientific method). Social scientific research. Quantitative and qualitative methodology. Research as a process. Linear - quantitative research (preparatory - project phase, implementation phase - data collection, final phase - analysis and interpretation of data). Developmental - qualitative research. Research project of quantitative research, its structure. Research topic (research area, research topic). Research objective. Research question. Hypotheses. Quantitative research as a process of testing hypotheses. Principles of formulating a hypothesis. Operationalization of hypotheses. Methods of sociological research. Mathematical-statistical, historical, comparative and typological method, monographic method, social scientific experiment. Research techniques. Data collection techniques. The principle of plurality of methods and techniques within the framework of a research event. From hypotheses to the construction of data collection techniques (see operationalization). Questionnaire. Possibilities and limits. Principles of questionnaire construction: Ordering questions - dramaturgy of questioning. Types of questions in interview techniques. Principles of question formulation. Interview. Types of interviews (individual and group; structured, semi-structured-unstructured) and their characteristics. Principles of construction. Principles of application (interviewer and respondent interaction). Selection and preparation of interviewers. Specific types of interview techniques (online interviewing, telephone interviewing, etc.). Observation technique. Characteristics, possibilities and limits of application of standardized and non-standardized, overt and covert observation. Preparation and principles of application of the technique. Study of documents. General characteristics of research techniques, types of documents. Fields of application, documents in quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative content analysis of documents. Classification scheme. Analytical categories, analytical units, counting units (quantification process). Experiment technique. Possibilities and limits of its use in social sciences. Principles of organization and implementation of the experiment. Data processing, analysis and interpretation. Final research report. Introduction to qualitative research. Differences between qualitative and quantitative methodology. Possibilities of integrating quantitative and qualitative (mixed research).

Learning outcomes
|
The students will learn to formulate a research problem, elaborate a project of a simple sociological research and construct the technique of data acquisition. They will be introduced to the crucial issues of interpretation of the collected data.
