Between the fall semester of the second year and the spring semester of the third year, students select a seminar paper (SP) from topics that correspond to a selected required or required-elective course in the independent study program. The instructor of the student's selected course serves as the advisor and evaluator for the seminar paper. The student has 12 weeks of the selected semester to choose a topic and write the paper. The standards for the seminar paper and the criteria for evaluating the final paper are the same for all students. The paper is 15 standard pages in length, includes the appropriate type and number of sources, and cites those sources with the required frequency. The content structure and formal requirements, including language standards, are provided to students prior to topic selection via the document "Instructions for the Seminar Paper." Each student is evaluated based on identical criteria (see Seminar Paper - Evaluation Form). Like any other course, the Seminar Paper course is governed by the provisions of the UP Study and Examination Regulations (see https://files.upol.cz/sites%2Fpub%2FPubNormy%2FA-10-2011-UZ05.pdf).
Students will be able to define the topic of their seminar paper, locate and analyze scholarly sources, formulate arguments, and produce a text that meets the basic requirements of academic writing.
