Course content
1. Concept of health and illness in historical perspective, origin of sociology of medicine; 2. Sociology of health and disease - social medicine, social epidemiology, social paediatrics and social geriatrics; 3. Individual and social value of health; 4. Changes in perspectives in social construction of health and disease (biomedical model, socio - ecological model, psychosomatic model); 5. Medicinalization and medicalization of the life of contemporary society; 6. Health and disease in sociological theories I. - structural functionalism; 7. Health and disease in sociological theories II. - interpretative concept; 8. Objective and subjective assessment of health (life expectancy, infant mortality, male over-mortality, QALE, QALYs, HLE, HLY) 9. Objective assessment of illness (morbidity, incidence and prevalence, years of life without disease, possibility of measuring quality of life; DALYs); 10. Social determinants of health of the 18th - 19th centuries - poverty and health (Johan Peter Frank, Grotjahn, Virchow, Hamza, Procházka, Pelc etc.) 11. Social determinants of 20th century health - public health and social change (Mc Keown, Lupton, Lalonde), fundamental determinants of health (Link, Phelan, Dahrendorf, Whitehead) 12. Social determinants in the 21st century (Wilkinson, Marmot, Siegrist, Holčík, Koupilová, etc.) 13. Health inequalities (Black report, WHO history, WHO declarations and programs until 2000); 14. Cultural differences in the concept of health and disease and demographic facts: Eastern and Western Europe, North and South America; Africa and Asia 15. Sociological research focused on health and disease (historical development and current trends); 16. Health promotion and disease prevention, health literacy phenomenon.

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is: to acquaint students with sociological aspects of health and illness, to show the concept of health and disease in sociological theories of structural functionalism and interpretative approach and to emphasize the difference of sociological conception from the concept of biomedical and psychological; teach students to differentiate between individual and social health values; to emphasize the importance of social determinants of health to students, especially in assessing health inequalities and describing the socio-ecological model of health; to train students in the analysis of cultural and social influences on behavior in relation to health and disease in historical context and nowadays; explain to the students the mechanism of medicinalization and medicalization according to Ivan Illich and draw attention to the power and control tools of medicine in society; to teach students to identify, based on both objective and subjective assessment of health and illness, approaches to health and disease of different social groups with specific health needs by gender, age, ethnicity, religion, education, economic status, working conditions, lifestyle, etc .; to clarify to students the basic concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention, including health literacy as a contemporary social construct and health policy ideology.
The student will be able to look at health and illness as a social phenomenon and distinguish it from biomedical and psychological phenomena. They will understand health and disease in sociological theories of structural functionalism and interpretative approach. He will be aware of the value of health, both from an individual and social perspective. He will be oriented in the theories of social determinants of health according to Lalonde, Whitehead, Willkinson and Marmot, will understand the importance of health inequalities following the report of Sir Black, the so-called Black Report. They will be able to analyze cultural and social influences on health and disease in historical context and in present and explain to students the mechanisms of medicinalization and medicalization. He will recognize the social power of medicine and will be able to point out its control mechanisms. They will know the tools of objective and subjective measurement as well as health and disease assessment and the most important indicators of the health status of the population. They will be able to evaluate these indicators in relation to the social care of the population. He will know the importance of lifestyle in relation to health - his limits and possibilities and his relation to health literacy as a social construct.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Essay, Seminar Work

Presentation of a group of students (always 3 - 4 students) on the topic: trends in the selected demographic phenomenon in relation to the social and cultural concept of health and disease in specific population groups (national or international). Other requirements: 80% attendance at seminars. Seminar work (essay) on the topic of a selected health problem from the perspective of normative (biomedical) and interpretative (student) - 2 - 3 pages, including a list of literature.
