Course content
1. Education. Pedagogical, andragogical, psychological and sociological definition of education. Individual features of each definition, compliances and differences. Typical definitions of education from the disciplines´ authorities. 2. Sociology of education as a specialized discipline. The origin of the sociology of education as a specialized discipline. Its development from social pedagogy and sociological pedagogy, pedagogical sociology to sociology of education. 3. Paradigms in sociology and the position of education within them. Consensual paradigm, structural functionalism, and the position of education within it. Conflict paradigm and the position of education within it. Interpretative paradigm and the position of education within it. 4. Acculturation, enculturation, socialization and education. Differences in meaning when using the terms acculturation, enculturation, socialization and education in social sciences. 5. Cultural dimension of education. Cultural specifics of education in Geert Hofstede´s theory, power distance, individualism and collectivism, masculinity and femininity, avoiding the insecurity. 6. Gender and education. The influence of education on the social construction of gender. Gender in schools, curriculum, and education content. 7. Social structure of the society and education. Education and its influence on the social status constituency. Synthetic social status and the ways to measure it. Education inequality in the Czech society. 8. Social and cultural reproduction: structural approach. Education and social and cultural reproduction of the society. Effects of the education system according to Raymond Boudon or Alan Chester Kerckhoff. Structural theory of social reproduction. 9. Social and cultural reproduction: cultural approach. Cultural theory and social and cultural reproduction. Basil Bernstein, Paul Willis, Jay MacLeod. Synthesis of cultural and structural theories in Pierre Bourdieu´s work. 10. Sociology of education and work. Relation between education and work. Education as a chance in the labour market. Qualification and the situation of the graduates in the labour market. Position of the graduates in the labour market, the REFLEX research results. 11. Sociology of education and education policy. Statistic data about education in OECD, and UNESCO reports. University education and its availability within population. 12. Research methods in the sociology of education. Quantitative and qualitative researches in the sociology of education. Standardized questioners, qualitative research methods.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course Sociology of Education is to introduce the students into different interpretations of the term education in sociology, pedagogy, andragogy and psychology. To describe the development of sociology of education as a scientific discipline, opinions of the sociological paradigms of upbringing and education, functions of upbringing and education in society. To present the function of upbringing and education in social and cultural reproduction of society.
Student can: - characterize the development of the sociology of education as a scientific discipline, - analyse the functions of education in the society, - argue about the manifest and latent functions of education, - reason the functions of education for the society reproduction. Student is able to work with basic literature from the sociology of education Student is capable to assess the differences of the approaches towards education in the disciplines like sociology, pedagogy, andragogy and psychology.
