The aim of the course is to introduce the basic concepts and historical development of demography and the principles of its work. Demography is a scientific discipline with a specific object and subject of interest and uses its own terminology. Students will become familiar with the current position of demography among other disciplines and its history. They will be provided with basic information about the sources, methods and principles of collecting and disseminating data on the population and its demographic reproduction, as well as sources of other professional information and data. Special attention will be paid to the concept of time in demography, including the display of demographic data in the Lexis diagram. In this context, basic approaches to description and analysis in demography will be discussed and a general system of demographic indicators will be introduced. The entire course concludes with illustrations of selected determinants and consequences of population development through the presentation of real cases, a discussion of the relationships of population development with other social, economic, political, cultural and natural processes, and examples of the use of demographic knowledge in practice.
After completing the course, the student understands the basic concepts, theories and methods of demography, is familiar with sources of demographic data, uses basic demographic indicators, interprets population processes and their connections, and applies demographic knowledge in the analysis of social phenomena and practical problems.
