Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide a critical insight into the construction of otherness and the strengthening of social inequalities on the example of the Roma in the Czech and European context. Ethnicity will be presented on a specific material as a relational dynamic variable based on negotiation in power uneven space; Attention will be paid to stigmatization practices and non-Roma actors on the one hand, followed by Roma strategies and actors on the other. This concept of ethnicity will then be used to analyze the institutional practices, structural conditions and discourses that establish a social space in which actors identified as Roma are subsequently disciplined through their identified otherness.
After completing the course, students will be critical of any essentializing views of Roma groups; be able to assess the risks of stigmatization, exotization and power dominance in public discourse; they will be able to adequately argue in discussions on the issue of Roma otherness with reference to the complexity of the phenomenon of stigmatizing ethnicity and power inequalities.
