The aim of the course is to critically document the conceptualization of Czech and Slovak Roma in contemporary anthropology. Students will be acquainted with the existing literature, the results of fundamental research and their methodology. Emphasis will be put on the phenomenon of exotization in the selection of research strategies and localities, while obscuring the plurality of Roma communities. Students will be acquainted with possible alternative approaches based on emphasizing the structural level of the position of the Roma and also highlighting the actors' perspective.
The student will understand the differences between the individual research traditions of Roma research and their limits; will know the possible research methods of Roma research; will be able to evaluate the risks of selectivity, exotization and power dominance in the anthropological tradition so far; will be able to propose adequate strategies to eliminate problematic assumptions and implications of previous research.
