Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the basic concepts and theories of postcolonialism. We will explore the relationship between colony, postcolony, tribe, ethnicity, nation and state within the literature of socio-cultural anthropology, sociology, political science, literary theory, history and the so-called cultural studies. Postcolony as a specific identity emerging from a distinct historical trajectory, will be examined as a dynamic phenomenon, including further elements such as tradition and modernity, authority and power, and culture and identity.
After successful passing the course the student will be able to demonstrate a relatively complex knowledge of the major concepts and theories of postcolonialism: the history of ideas, institutions, development of methodology, dominating scholarly interests, including the knowledge of great figures - founders of the main schools of thought. At the same time, he or she will be able - also after going through seminar work with primary texts - to apply an analytical and critical approach.
