Learning outcomes
The course presents the history of Buddhism, including its gradual differentiation into different schools. Students will learn the basics of Buddhist teaching and practice, including the principles of displaying Buddhist characters. Students will be able to interpret selected Buddhist texts and different Buddhist teachings that were developing in connection with the spread of Buddhism to different regions. Upon completion of the course, students will explain the basic elements of Buddhist doctrine and practice, including their context, identify ethnocentrism and Western stereotyping of Buddhism.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam, Written exam

Mandatory attendance at 75% of classes, active participation in classes. Continuous reading of primary texts during the semester and preparation of answers to ongoing tasks. Test of key concepts in Sanskrit/Pali related to Buddhist teachings and major figures of Buddhism. Successful completion of the oral exam.
