Course content
1) Sociolinguistics and its employment in diachronic linguistics. Basic terms: variant, code, language, dialect, language variable (phonetic, morphosyntactic, lexical), language contact Reading: López Morales, H.: Sociolingüística. 2) Iberian Peninsula during the period of reconquista (social and political outline), waves of migration, settlement of New Castile and Andalusia, balancing the differences between individual dialects during the period of migration. Reading: Penny, R.: Variación y cambio. 3) Overview of theories of formation of Spanish in Latin America, myths of the character of Latin American Spanish. Influence of indigenous languages. Reading: Lipski, J.: Espaňol en América. Lope Blanch, J.: Espaňol de América. 4) Spanish in Latin America; waves of migration, centres of political power and their influence on formation of Spanish in American colonies and some of their distinctive features (aspiration and preservation of implosive /s/, laryngeal consonant /h/, seseo, etc.) Reading: Penny, R.: Variación y cambio. Lipski, J.: Espaňol en América 5) Spanish in Latin America: system of personal pronouns (voseo, ustedeo, tuteo), system of verb tenses, syntactic particularities, etc. Reading: Palacio, M. ? Safford, F.: Colombia: un país dividido, sociedad fragmentada 6) Creole and pidgin languages: historical, social and political context, birth of those language forms, pidginization, (de)creolization, theory of the birth of pidgin and creole languages. Creole languages and pidgin in the world. Reading: López Morales, H.: Sociolingüística, Penny, R.: Variación y cambio. 7) Iberian-based creole languages: palenquero (historical, social and political context, linguistic description) Reading: Zimmermann, K.: Lenguas criollas de base lexical espaňola y portuguesa. 8) Iberian-based creole languages: papiamento (historical, social and political context, linguistic description) Reading: Zimmermann, K.: Lenguas criollas de base lexical espaňola y portuguesa. 9) Language policy towards creole languages. The position of palenquero in Colombia and papiamento in the Netherlands Antilles. Birth of the normative form of papiamento. Learning outcomes
The course will examine the mutual influence of political, social and economic aspects on the dynamics of language system. The course follows up the obligatory course The Development of the Spanish Language while it tries to analyse the relation between individual language changes (phonological, morphological, etc.) and events of political and social character such as migration, transatlantic discoveries, relation of power between individual regions and political centres in the Spanish speaking world, etc. The second part of the course is dedicated to creole and pidgin languages while we try to explain their origin and contemporary situation based on the influence of political and social character such as Atlantic trade, slavery, migration, etc. Special attention will be also paid to language policy towards creole languages and their position in the society.
Students will deepen their knowledge of current trends in the Spanish language, which will enable them to properly understand the current written and spoken Spanish.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark

To finish the course satisfactory, it is necessary to actively participate in the classes, to prepare a presentation on selected topic and to pass a written test based on what has been taught in the classes.
