The focus is on prominent figures in modern Colombian literature. From the themes of travel and the relationship between man, nature and other cultures in the canonical novels of Eustasio Rivera and Eduardo Zalamea Borda, we move on to the forerunners of the Colombian "boom" (Cepeda Samudio, Jorge Zalamea Borda). Other examples of the literary richness of the Caribbean coast are the baroque poetics of Germán Espinoza's new historical novel and the search for an African American identity in Zapata Olivella's work. We then move on to the theme of the city in the novels of Eduardo Caballero and Fernando Vallejo. The themes of violence, migration and memory will be explored in texts by Evelio Rosero, Santiago Gamboa and Abad Faciolince. On the basis of literary theories, an analysis of specific texts in their original versions is carried out. The texts are analyzed in terms of theme, plot, characters, imagery, language, style, etc.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to introduce students to contemporary literary tendencies in the fictional works of the most important Colombian post-boom and postmodern authors. A brief introduction to the development of 20th century Colombian literature will introduce the main trends and their representatives, but the focus of the course is the study of the current socio-cultural and political situation (themes of guerrilla, drug trafficking, violence, economic emigration, ethnicity, etc.) and its relationship to narrative strategies and poetics. The theoretical part will mention approaches to structural and hermeneutic interpretation (transculturation, heterogeneity, deconstructivism, discourse critique) of the contemporary Hispanic American novel. This knowledge will be applied to the analysis of selected texts.
Ability to perform literary classification and appropriate literary analysis within the course objectives.
