Course content
|
The course coveres the following topics: 1) Fundamental characteristics of legal Spanish (Rasgos del espa?ol jurídico) 2) Fundamental legal concepts (Conceptos básicos de derecho) 3) Sources of law (Fuentes de derecho) 4) Contract law (Contratos) 5) Civil procedure (Enjuiciamiento civil) 6) Business law (Derecho mercantil) 7) Criminal law (Derecho penal) 8) Criminal procedure (Enjuiciamiento penal) 9) Notarial deeds (Acta notarial) 10) Family law (Derecho de familia) Not all of the above topic will be necessarily covered depending on the time available and the preferences of students.

Learning outcomes
|
This course provides a contrastive overview of selected legal branches and related Spanish and Czech legal and administrative terminology. The course focuses both on translation from Czech to Spanish and from Spanish to Czech. Students are assigned translation tasks involving real-life documents, mainly from Spain. Grammatical pecularities of legal Spanish are also discussed as well as the theory and practice of legal translation in general.
Students acquire basic knowledge of the lexis of legal and administrative texts in Spanish. Students are able to translate selected (not only) legal documents from and to Spanish and use online and lexicographic resources available to translators.

Active knowledge of Czech is required.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance
1) Regular attendance (a maximum of 2 missed classes in a semester) 2) Active participation in classes and completion of any tasks assigned. 3) Final test focusing on terminology and phraseology (pass mark: 75%)
