Course content
1. Introducción a la mentalidad de las islas. 2. La formación de la identidad en las islas 3. La conquista de Canarias y el descubrimiento de América 4. Historia de los aborígenes de Canarias y el Caribe (Guanches y Taínos) 5. Canarias: cultura, historia y política. 6. Cuba. Dominicana y Puerto Rico: cultura, historia y política. 7. Músicas del Caribe: puente de culturas. 8. Las relaciones históricas entre Canarias y las Antillas. 9. Algunas particularidades de la lengua espanola en Canarias y las Antillas. 10. Gastronomía: el espíritu de la cultura. 11. Tradiciones (Canarias-Cuba-Puerto Rico-Dominicana).

Learning outcomes
The course deals with the cultures of the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and the Antilles, which share a tropical-island mentality and are the result of a cultural mosaic due to their function as a bridge between America, Europe and Africa. Attention will be paid in particular to history, geography, literature, music, film and tourism. In addition, the course will focus on the peculiarities of the Spanish spoken on these islands (e.g. vocabulary, intonation and expressions).
Mastery of the subject matter to the extent specified in the course objectives.

Assessment methods and criteria
Didactic Test, Final Report

- Active participation in seminars (presentations in Spanish, exercises). 3 unexcused absences are allowed. - Home preparation for class (reading 25 hours, preparation of exercises and presentations 25 hours). - Written exam
