Course content
|
1. Definition of the sound plan within the language system and its relations to other plans. Definition of phonetics and phonology as linguistic disciplines and a brief outline of their development. Acoustic and articulatory aspects in the description of the sound plan. 2. The formation, transmission, and perception of speech from the acoustic and articulatory point of view 3. Spanish vowels and their classification from the acoustic and articulatory point of view. Comparison with Czech. Spanish vowels in the light of dialectal differences. 4. Vowel changes of contact and distance in Spanish and their systematization. Comparison with Czech. 5. Practical mastery of phonetic transcription (IPA) 6. Phonetic units of speech and their division: accentual beat, speech segment, melodic unit 7. Suprasegmental elements (accent, rhythm, intonation) of Spanish and their comparison with Czech. 8. Spanish consonants, vowels and suprasegmental devices from the phonological point of view. Regional differences in the phonological system of Spanish. Comparison with Czech.

Learning outcomes
|
This course focuses on the explanation of the basic concepts of phonetics and phonology and their application to the Spanish language. The course also investigates the difference in the sound plan between Czech and Spanish. The course also highlights in basic terms the phonetic and phonological differences between the most important varieties of European and American Spanish.
The students know the basic concepts of articulatory and acoustic phonetics and phonology of Spanish, they can perform phonetic transcription of selected texts, they can distinguish between written and unwritten pronunciation and basic dialectal differences in pronunciation. They can create and read spectrograms.

Final written exam, approx. 100 pages of academic text in Czech and 50 pages in Spanish, regular attendance.
