Course content
1. 16th century. The arrival of the Habsburgs (Philip I, Juana la Loca, Charles I, Philip II). Renaissance. Golden Age I (Lazarillo de Tormes). Magellan and Elcano: The First World Tour. The Universal Empire. The Inquisition. 2. 17th Century. Felipe III, Felipe IV and Carlos II. The valid of the kings. The decline of the Spanish empire? The Golden Age (II). Art: The Spain of Diego de Velázquez and the school of Seville. Don Quixote of La Mancha (Cervantes). The Baroque. Historical novel and historical cinema: Captain Alatriste (representations of the past). 3. XVIII century. The arrival of the Borbornes. The War of Secession (1701-17013). The Treaty of Utrecht (1713). The Enlightenment. The scientific expeditions to the Pacific. The French Revolution. El real de a ocho. Neoclassicism and pre-Romanticism. 4. XIX century. Romanticism, naturalism, realism and modernism. Goya. The Napoleonic invasion (1808). The War of Independence. The Constitution of Cadiz (1812). The absolutism of Fernando VII. The liberal Triennium (1820-23). The ominous decade (1823-33). The end of the continental empire in the Indies (Ayacucho, 1824). The modernization of Spain. Pedagogy and Science: The student residence in Madrid; Pedagogical missions of the Republic. Culture and subculture: the birth of subcultures.

Learning outcomes
Description and analysis of the development of Spanish society from 16th century till today. The emphasis is put on the political economical and social factors and on the culture, traditions and art.
