Course content
1. Introduction to dialectological terminology and methods: language and its diatopic and diastratic variation, dialect and sociolect; language and speech community. The past and present of the Spanish language situation. 2. Methods of dialectological research. Linguistic geography and language atlases. 3. The origin and development of Romance dialects on the Iberian Peninsula and their main features. Aragonese 4. Catalan, Valencian, Balearic variants, development, main features, current situation. Spanish of Catalan speakers. 5. Asturleon language, development, main features, current situation. 6. Galician, development, main features, current situation. The Spanish of Galician speakers. 7. Basque and Spanish of Basque speakers. 8. Mozarabic and Sephardic, development, main features, current situation. 9. Origin and development of varieties of Castilian and their main features. Northern variety. 10. Southern (Andalusian) varieties of Castilian, development, main features, current situation. 11. Transitional varieties: Extremadura, development, main features, current situation. 12. Transitional varieties: Murcian language, development, main features, current situation. 13. Transitional varieties: Spanish in the Canary Islands, development, main features, current situation.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical differences between regional varieties of Spanish in Spain, on other languages in the territory of today's Spain, on the current situation of individual languages and dialects and on language policy in relation to them.

Mark, Written exam, Student performance, Systematic Observation of Student

Written exam, active participation in the seminar (analysis of dialectal texts and maps), reading of approx. 200 pages of scholarly literature in Spanish
