Course content
- Medieval culture, Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, songbooks, medieval theater, Gil Vicente, musical puppet theater - Bernardim Ribeiro - the first sentimental novel, the culture of the Alentejo, Évora and its architecture, the Renaissance - Sá de Miranda, António Ferreira - Luís Vaz de Cam?es - Os Lusíadas, Portugal during the Age of Discovery - Portuguese Baroque, Baroque theater and opera, Portuguese Baroque

Learning outcomes
The course should provide a survey of the development of the oldest Portuguese literature, since its beginnings up to the Renaissance. It focuses on the period of the Galician-Portuguese lyrics, the medieval prose and historiography, the poetry collected in Cancioneiro Geral, the Gil Vicente's dramatic works and Renaissance authors (lyrics, epics, drama, the literature of overseas discoveries). A special attention is paid to Luís de Camoes' poetry. During the seminars, students analyse selected texts of the most important authors in Portuguese.
Students will gain an overview of the development of early Portuguese literature, from its beginnings through the Renaissance period.
