The topic of this course is the history of the Portuguese literature from the Baroque up to the so-called Generation of the 1870s. The attention is paid to the works of the most important authors of respective periods (P. António Vieira, Bocage, Almeida Garrett, Camilo Castelo Branco, Júlio Dinis, Eça de Queirós etc.). During the seminars, students analyse selected texts of the most important authors in Portuguese.
Students become familiar with main trends in the evolution of the Portuguese literature of the given period. Students should become able to define main notions, basic notions for the given literary context and interconnect literary questions with culturally historical issues. Students should be able to classify the concrete authors within such context, characterise generally their works and analyse in detail the selected texts. Students learn to discuss the matter and independently approach the interpretation of texts.
