The seminar introduces students to the issues of translation and familiarizes them with basic translation procedures. Attention is also paid to some differences between Czech and Italian (verb tenses and moods, homonyms and polysemic words, false friends, etc.) and the characteristic features of individual functional styles. Students apply the acquired skills in translating short texts of medium professional difficulty in the fields of administration, business correspondence, law, etc. In the initial part of each seminar, vocabulary in the given field is practiced as well as selected grammatical and stylistic phenomena in Italian and Czech. In the following part of the lesson, there is a discussion on the translation that the students were supposed to prepare as homework. Interesting ideas arising from the discussion can then inspire them when revising the given translation, and the revised version is then submitted to the teacher for the first revision. The texts are translated in both directions.
