Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the development of Italian literature from the early seventeenth century to the end of the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the evolution of literary forms and genres, as well as on the interrelation between literature and the society, mentality, and political structures of the periods of absolutism and totalitarianism. The seminar sessions will focus on the analysis of selected works of major importance in the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italian literature, approached also with the aim of developing reading and hermeneutic skills (Foscolo, Sepolcri; Leopardi, La ginestra; Verga, Rosso Malpelo, D'Annunzio, Lungo l'Affrico; Pirandello, Novelle per un anno; Tozzi, Giovani).
