Course content
The topics of the lectures are as follows: Classicism and Romanticism. Ugo Foscolo. Giacomo Leopardi. The nineteenth-century novel: from Manzoni to Verga. Symbol and allegory. Giovanni Pascoli and Gabriele D'Annunzio. Some lectures will also be devoted to the in-depth study of historical topics. Seminar sessions are complemented by independent study of course materials on history and literary history.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the development of Italian literature from the early seventeenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the evolution of literary forms and genres, as well as on the interrelation between literature and the society, mentality, and political structures of the periods of absolutism and totalitarianism. The seminar sessions will focus on the analysis of selected works of major importance in the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italian literature, approached also with the aim of developing reading and hermeneutic skills (Foscolo, Sepolcri; Leopardi, La ginestra; Verga, Rosso Malpelo, D'Annunzio, Lungo l'Affrico; Pirandello, Novelle per un anno; Tozzi, Giovani).
Students will learn the basic evolution trends of modern Italian literature. They will be able to distinguish literary forms and genres, they will realize the link of literature with the society, mentality and political structures. They will analyze the text, considering their destination to a specific audience, they will distinguish the function of consumer and artistic literature. They will be able to identify the texts from various periods and regions, will realize their literary value and historical importance.
