Course content
The themes of the course will be concentrated in these groups: 1) Position of intellectuals in the Renaissance society. The question of the "civic humanism" and the court culture. The role of the Church. 2) The question of literary language and the valutation of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. 3) The evolution of the love poetry - Boiardo, Poliziano, Pontano, Bembo. 4) The Renaissance and the everyday life - letters, memoires, merchant's literature, tales. 5) The evolution of political literature since the early humanism to N. Machiavelli. 6) L. Ariosto and his Orlando furioso. The course is supported by the project CZ.1.07/2.3.00/20.0026 Centrum pro práci s renesančními texty.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to explain the main evolution lines in the Italian literature since the beginning of the 15-th century to the end of the 16-th century. The teaching and the text reading is concentrated to Renaissance literary genres and their connections with the classical civilisation. A strong stress will be put to the fundamental texts of this period like Ariosto's Orlando furioso and Machiavelli's Prince. The course will observe the relationship between the literature and a general cultural situation in the Renaissance period.
Comprehension of the specific features of the Renaissance literature, of its relationship to the society, ability to reach the Renaissance imagery through the literature, acquaitenance with important texts of poetry, fiction and philosophic literature.

Oral exam

Active participation in the course, fulfilling teacher's requirements, knowlege of the required texts.
