Course content
1. Research methods in Italian historiography 2. Ancient Rome and its heritage 3. Migration period, Ostrogoths, Byzantium, Langobards, Charles the Great, arrival of the Normans 4. The communes period, popes against emperors, Staufer politics in Italy 5. 14th century, Avignon papacy, changes in political orientation 6. Italian renaissance, a century of Neapolitan rule, church state, Florence, Milano, Venice 7. Mannerism and Italian wars 8. Role of the papal state, counterreformation and censorship of public life 9. Baroque and the "long 17th century" (end of 16th till the beginning of 18th) 10. 18th century European powers and new order in Italy 11. Enlightenment (Dall'Arcadia all'illuminismo)

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of Italian history from the pre-Roman period up till today, call attention to typical characteristics of Italian history, precedents of the Italian state (Ancient Rome, European powers), and to the issues of Italian historiography, and Italian cultural development (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, drama).
The student understands the basic tendencies in the development of Italy since pre-Roman times up until today, they are aware of typical characteristics of Italian history, precedents of the Italian state (ancient Rome, European powers), issues in Italian historiography, they are able to contrast historical development with cultural development (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, drama).

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam

Attendance of the lectures and seminars, reading the given literary and specialized texts, preparation for the exam, presentation, credit test, passing the exam.
