Course content
1. Introduction 2. Ancient Rome and its Legacy 3. Migration Period, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Lombards, Charlemagne, the expansion of the Normans 4. Time of communes, fighting emperors and popes, Hohenstaufen policy in Italy 5. Fourteenth century, Avignon Papacy, Change of political orientation 6. Italian Renaissance century of powers - Naples, the Papal States, Florence, Milan, Venice 7. Mannerism and Italian Wars 8. Baroque - "long seventeenth century" (from the late 16th century till the early 18th century). 9. Enlightenment (Dall'Arcadia all'illuminismo) 10. Napoleon and Restoration (the first half of the 19th century) 11. Since the Risorgimento to "Belle Epoque" 12. The First World War, Fascism and The Second World War

Learning outcomes
- Basic knowledge of Italian history. - Introduction to the fundamental research and literature.
Students will acquire: Basic knowledge of the history of Italy and in the sources and in the literature. Student will be able to undertake independent research. Student will be able to critically evaluate sources, to recognize the relationship between the historical development and the development of culture and art.
