The course covers two main topics concerning the evolution of the French language: (1) external history of the French language (i.e. social, cultural, literary, political events affecting the usage and the form of the French in the given period); (2) internal history of the French language (i.e. the evolution of the system of the language, its acoustic, lexical and grammatical levels). These two approaches will be combined in the course.
Students are able to explain the external and the internal history of the French language, in particular the phenomena permitting to understand some features of the contemporary language (exceptions, abnormalities, characteristic features of the French language as compared to other Romance languages).
