Course content
This course covers the following topics: Lexical units of Latin origin and from the languages of the Celts and the Franks. Borrowings from Greek, Latin, Arabic, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, German and English Derivation, composition, abbreviations, idioms Synonymy, antonymy, homonymy and polysemy Changes of meaning and their grounds

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to make the students familiar with the selected topics from French lexicology. The vocabulary is presented both from synchronous and asynchronous point of view. The topics covered in lectures are illustrated by means of texts and practised in exercises.
1/ To understand the development of French vocabulary and the relationships among the lexical units 2/ To be able to apply the the acquired knowledge during the exercises in the work with texts 3/ To enrich one's French vocabulary 4/ To develop the ability to analyse French word stock

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

1/ Regular attendance and active participation in the lectures and seminars 2/ Preparation for the classes, knowledge of the texts to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of the basic issues of French lexicology
