Course content
|
1. French drama in the Romantic period. Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas the Elder, Alfred de Vigny, Alfred de Musset. 2. Realistic and naturalistic theatre 3. Symbolism in theatre, Maurice Maeterlinck. 4. Edmond Rostand and his Cyrano de Bergerac 5. Theatre work of the first half of the twentieth century and the "classical" authors Claudel, Giraudoux, Anouilh. 6. Rolland's "theater of revolution" and its critical reception 7. Existentialism in French drama, Sartre, Camus. 8. Theatre of the absurd, Artaud's "theater of cruelty", "new" theatre.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to familiarize students in detail with the main developmental stages of French drama of the 19th and 20th centuries and to lead them to an independent literary-theoretical analysis of key texts.
deeper understanding of the patterns of development of French drama of the 19th and 20th centuries against the background of social and cultural events deepening the ability to work with literary terminology improving the ability to interpret a text as a meaning structure, to apply various historical and contemporary methods of literary analysis to specific texts developing the ability of professional polemics

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Seminar Work
Completion of the course is conditional on the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for individual lessons, active participation in seminars, and study of relevant professional literature. The exam tests orientation in the literary history of the given time period and in literary theory.
