Course content
The course will cover the following topics: 1. Psychological "précieux" novel of Madame de La Fayette 2. Lesage and Marivaux, picaresque and educational novel 3. Diderot as an author of antinovel 4. Adventurous and romantic novel of Abbé Prévost 5. Voltaire's and Montesquieu's narrative 6. Rousseau's epistolary novel 7. Laclos's libertine novel 8. Sade as an author of black philosophical novel 9. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre as a predecessor of romantic novel forms 10. Cazot's fantastic novel

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the main stages of development in French novel of the 17th and 18th centuries and to guide the students to independent literary and theoretical analysis of the fundamental texts.
to understand better the rules of development of the French novel in the 17th and 18 centuries in the social and cultural context to perfection the ability to work with literary terminology in relation to the typology of novel and its analysis to improve the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning, to apply different historical and contemporary approaches of literary analysis on particular texts to develop the ability to lead an academic discussion

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Seminar Work

1. regular attendance and active participation in the seminars 2. preparation for each class, knowledge of the text to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of the literary history of the given epoch and the literary theory.
