Course content
Themes discussed: 1. Language functions, the communication process 2. Origins of language and the development of various levels of language (grammar, vocabulary, meaning) 3. Differences between written and spoken forms of language, the development of writing 4. Genetic classification of languages 5. Typological classification of languages 6. Language system and structure 7. Phonetics and phonology 8. Morphology 9. Syntax 10. Lexicology and lexicography The individual themes discussed are further analysed in the seminars by exercises and texts written in French.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to general linguistics terminology, basic linguistic research concepts. This course should serve the students as basic preparation for further specialized lectures and seminars they will frequent in their later years of study (morphology, syntax, lexicology, etc.).
Mastering the content specified in the course objectives. Ability to read and critically receive texts from the area of general linguistics.

In order to complete this course, the student has to be present in class, prepare systematically for the seminars and study the required reading.
