Course content
This course will cover the following topics: 1. The oldest literature. Chansons de geste: the discourse Gesta Dei per Francos, the theory of their origin, the formation of cycles, the decomposition of Chansons de geste. 2. Courtoise literature, Chrétien de Troyes, Roman de la Rose I. 3. Realistic and satirical literature: fabliaux, Roman de Renard, Roman de la Rose II. 4. Development of French poetry in the 14th and 15th centuries. 6. Religious and secular drama 7. The outset of humanism and renaissance. Rabelais. 8. Development of poetry in the 16th century. The School of Lyon. La Pléiade. Ronsard. 9. Montaigne and his Essays: skepticism, stoicism and relativism; the role of the nature. 10. The Baroque period, its characteristics, bi-polarity, authors.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the development of French literature from its beginning in the medieval era, throught renaissance up to baroque. The covered topics include the main literary movements and their representatives. The attention is paid to a detailed analysis of their principal works and also less known literary production.
-understanding of the development of French literature from its beginning un to the end of the 16th century in the context of social and cultural changes -adoption of the ability to work with literary terminology -perfection of the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning, to apply different historical and current methods of literary analysis on particular texts -development of the ability to take part in an academic discussion

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam, Seminar Work

1/ regular attendance and active participation in the seminars 2/ preparation for each class, knowledge of the texts to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of literary history of the given epoch and the literary theory.
