Course content
Thematic areas discussed: 1. Letters as a communication device 2. Letters as a literary genre, composition, style, typology and thematic diversity 3. Definition of the epistolary genre, its ambiguity 4. Development of epistolary fiction in the history of French literature 5. Madame de Sévigné, Voiture - examples of mannerism and gallant style of writing 6. The epistolary novel as an important innovative phenomenon of 18th century French literature 7. Collected correspondence of literary writers and its importance for studying their works 8. The correspondence of Alfred Musset and George Sand 9. Gustave Flaubert's correspondence 10. Giraudoux, Lettres ? Suzanne 11. Letters in general as a meaningful motive in French literature

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the various forms and development of French epistolary literature.
Understanding the specificity of the epistolary genre in French literature.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Acquiring credits for the course is conditioned by the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for individual classes, active participation in seminars and studying the adequate research literature. The credit test evaluates the student's orientation and knowledge of chosen literary works.
