Course content
|
The course will cover the following topics: 1. Phonetics and phonology. Formation, development and branches of the discipline, classification of sounds. Relations with other disciplines. 2. Morphology. Grammatical categories. Their asymmetrical structure according to Jacobson. 3. Syntax. Sentence linearity, sentence structure. Functional sentence perspective. 4. Lexicology and lexicography. Onomastics. Lexicography. 5. Semantics. Semiotics. Linguistic sign and its motivation. Asymmetry of the linguistic sign. 6. Selected interdisciplinary branches (sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, philosophy of language etc.).

Learning outcomes
|
The students get acquainted with the terms from the field of general linguistics. From this point of view, the course deals with the basic components of the language (acoustic, morphological, syntactical, lexical). The emphasis is put on the comparison of Romance languages and possibly other branches of Indoeuropean languages. A part of the course is dedicated to selected interdisciplinary branches of linguistics.
The ability to understand principal general linguistic terms and the ability to read and critically approach the texts from the field of general linguistics.
