Course content
|
The course will cover the following topics: 1. Phonetics and phonology. Formation, development and branches of the discipline, classification of sounds. Relations with other disciplines. 2. Morphology. Grammatical categories. Their asymmetrical structure according to Jacobson. 3. Syntax. Sentence linearity, sentence structure. Functional sentence perspective. 4. Lexicology and lexicography. Onomastics. Lexicography. 5. Semantics. Semiotics. Linguistic sign and its motivation. Asymmetry of the linguistic sign. 6. Selected interdisciplinary branches (sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, philosophy of language etc.).

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with general linguistic concepts, the acquisition of principal linguistic terms and the ability to critically approach the texts from the field of general linguistics, including modern interdisciplinary branches.
