Course content
The course will center on the following topics: 1. Basic literary terminology and critical studies generally relating to the role of the comic in drama. (Definiton of comic in Aristotle's Poetics, Stendhal's essay on laughter, Mauron's psycho-critical interpretation, Henri Bergson and his models of situational comic, social role of laughter, Bachtin's conception). 2. Medieval farses 3. Moliere as an author of comedy of manners and creator of the "black humour". 4. Laughter in the drama of the 18th century: Regnard, Lesage, the authors of comedies of characters and manners, Nivelle de la Chaussée and his "comédie larmoyante". Beaumarchais, Marivaux. 5. Laughter in Musset's comedies and proverbs, language comic.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to make a detailed survey of the theory of the comic and its application on dramas from the main stages of development of the French comic drama from the Middle Ages until today.

Student performance

1/ regular attendance and active participation in the seminars 2/ preparation for each class, knowledge of the text to be analysed The exam tests the understanding of literary history of the given epoch and literary theory.
