Course content
1. The co-existence of literatures written in different languages in Latin America and the changes of the political, social and cultural background. 2. Characteristics of the French literature as minor literary production in Latin America. 3. Specificities of the Francophone authors and their production in the American setting and the artistic capturing of the political reality in their works. 4. Journalistic style of Alex May as a platform for the social and environmental devastation of French Guyana. 5. Patrick Chamoiseau, the laureate of the Goncourt Prize, and the linguistic and political themes in his saga Texaco, dedicated to Martinique. 6. Creole language as the identifying factor in the work of Raphael Confiant, a fighter for the sovereignty of Martinique. 7. Independence movements in Martinique, cultural politics of the Caribbean and the cultural and political activities of Jean Berbnabé. 8. The dream of return to the roots of family versus the real life in the exile as the omnipresent themes of the autobiographical prose of Dany Laferrier. 9. The problems of dealing with the colonial heritage, the dictatorial regime and a multi-cultural society in the work of a Haitian author, Kettly Mars. 10. The struggle for the immigrants? rights in the USA and the political freedom of an individual in the native Haiti seen through the work of Edwidge Danticat. 11. The variation of the theme of journey in the work of Louis-Philipp Dalembert, a world traveller of Haitian origin and a fighter for human rights. 12. Social and ethnic issues in the works of Elvire Maurouard. 13. The diversity of the theme of the woman character?s initiation journey in the works of woman writers from Guadeloupe (Maryse Condé and Gisele Pineau) and Haiti (Évelyne Trouillot, Fabienne Pasquet, Marie-Célie Agnant, Emmelie Prophete and Yanick Lahens).

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the history of literature written in French in Latin America, the principal authors and their major works.
1. To understand the principles of co-existence of literatures written in different languages in Latin America, on the social and cultural background. 2. To improve the ability of working with literary terminology. 3. To develop the ability of scholarly discussion. 4. To improve the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

1. Regular attendance and active participation in the lectures and seminars. 2. Preparation for each lesson; good knowledge of the text that is to be analysed. The exam tests the student?s knowledge of the literary history of Latin America. The emphasis is placed on the knowledge of the discussed Francophone authors and their selected works.
