Course content
The course will cover the following topics: 1. Literary movements and trends of the 17th and 18th centuries in the context of social and historical development (preciosity, Classicism, the Enlightenment) 3 Madame de Sévigné and the epistolar literature 3. Classicism and its poetics. Nicolas Boileau and the eclecticism of his doctrine 4. Poetry of the 17th century, Francois Malherbe and his successors 5. La Fontaine 6. André Chénier 7. Blaise Pascal - originality and uniformity of his thinking. The principles of cartesianism. 8. Authors-philosophers and their works beside the stable literary genres. Encyclopedias. 9. Tragedy and comedy during Classicism. Corneille, Racine, Moliere 10. Marivaux, Beaumarchais, bourgeois drama 11. Moralists and the authors of fragmental literature.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to make the student familiar with the main literary movements, the main authors and principal works of of the French literature of Classicism and the Enlightenment.
-to understand of the development of the French literature during Classicism and the Enlightenment, in the context of social and cultural changes -to master the ability to work with literary terminology -to perfection the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning, to apply different historical and current approaches of literary analysis on the particular texts -to develop the abilities of professional discussion

1/ regular attendance and active participation in the seminars 2/ preparation for each class, knowledge of the text to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of literary history of the given period.
