Learning outcomes
This course is designed to introduce an important aspect of the contemporary Hispanic novel. The methodological starting point is the thesis that a significant part of Latin American literature of the second half of the 20th century is intertwined with politics (a set of practices or mechanisms corresponding to traditional political activity) and the political (the way in which a particular society is constituted). Representative works reflecting the period of extreme politicization of the intellectual field that occurred with the Cuban Revolution (1959) and continued with the establishment of military dictatorships in several countries in the 1970s will be analyzed. The theoretical framework for examining the problem will be the definition of the term "political novel". Within this definition, we will ask what role the representational function (direct reference to the actual world) and the aesthetic function (reference to the fictional world and its narrative ordering) play in the political novel, or what narrative strategies the author uses to balance the two poles on the narrative axis: on the one hand, the so-called discursivity and on the other hand, fabulation. For example, the Frankfurt School theory (W. Benjamin), some approaches of reader-oriented theory (W. Iser) or selected chapters from extensional narratology will be used in the analysis of individual prose.
