Course content
1. Social and cultural development of 20th century France. Ideology and literary work. 2. Resonances of WWI in the novel. Large novel cycles: Jules Romains, Georges Duhamel, Roger Martin du Gard. 3. The novel during the interwar period and its transformations. 4. Marcel Proust. Elasticity and relativity of time, architectural music composition. 5. André Gide - the individualist principle, the requirements of honesty, truth and authenticity, innovating the technique of the novel. 6. Novelists of energy, action: Malraux, Montherlant, Saint-Exupéry. 7. Novelists of the spiritual: Mauriac, Bernanos. 8. Theatrical works of the first half of the 20th century and its specifics. Rolland's "Revolutionary theatre" and its critical reception. Edmond Rostand and his Cyrano de Bergerac 9. Dramatist and novelist Paul Claudel. 10. Jean Giraudoux and his disciple Jean Anouilh. 11. Poetry of the first half of the 20th century. Péguy, Claudel. 12. Modernism and postmodernism, the Dada movement and surrealism, Breton, Desnos, Eluard, Aragon. 13. Apollinaire's modernism. Valéry's hermetic poetry. Saint-John Perse, Pierre-Jean Jouve.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to main literary currents and schools of the 20th century and their representatives. The seminars are focused on detailed literary-theoretical analysis of fundamental literary works from each current.
Understanding the development of 20th century French literature within the context of social and cultural changes. Practicing the skill of working with literary terminology. Perfecting the skill of interpreting text as a meaningful structure, applying various historical and current methods of literary analysis on specific texts. Development of the ability of professional discussion.

A successful completion of the course is conditioned by the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for the individual classes, active participation in the seminars, knowledge of the analysed texts and an in-class presentation.
