Discussed themes: 1. The beginnings of positivism, realism and naturalism, the role of science, the Goncourt brothers. 2. Gustave Flaubert. 3. Guy de Maupassant, novelist. 4. Realist and naturalist short story - Maupassant, Daudet. 5. Émile Zola, novelist and literary critic. 6. Realist and naturalist theatre. 7. The Parnasse doctrine and its representatives. 8. Decadence and symbolism. Principles. 9. Symbolism in theatre, Maurice Maeterlinck. 10. Lautréamont. Baudelaire. 11. Rimbaud. 12. Verlaine. 13. Critical tendencies in the 19th century: biographical, dogmatic and impressionist criticism.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the main literary movements of the 19th century and the authors. The seminars are focused on a detailed literary-theoretical analysis of the principal works.
Understanding the development of 19th century French literature with the context of social and cultural changes. Perfecting the skill of working with literary terminology, interpreting text as a meaningful structure and applying various methods of literary analysis to specific textual material.

Mark, Oral exam, Student performance, Systematic Observation of Student, Seminar Work
A successful completion of the course is conditioned by the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for the individual classes, active participation in the seminars, knowledge of the analysed texts and an in-class presentation.
