Course content
1. Introduction to external EU environmental policies. The EU as a global environmental actor 2. The EU and international regimes: the Paris Agreement, COP, UNEP 3. EU cooperation with other international organizations. Bilateral and regional agreements 4. EU green diplomacy and strategic partners (US, China, Africa) 5. The role of the EU in candidate countries 6. The EU and the European Neighborhood Policy 7. Agenda 2030 and SDGs in EU external action. 8. EU trade policy and climate sustainability (carbon tax, CETA, GSP+). The EU and development aid: the environmental dimension. 9. Financing external environmental policies 10. The role of the EU in global climate change. 11. The external dimension of the EU in the field of biodiversity protection 12. Criticism of the EU's approach: green externality, ecological imperialism?

Learning outcomes
This course provides information on the main environmental issues and challenges facing the world today and offers an understanding of how the European Union approaches environmental protection at a global level. Students gain insight into European Union policies related to environmental protection and an understanding of the roles and strategies the EU plays in the international context to promote sustainability. It focuses on the external dimension of European Union environmental policy, examining its impact on the global environment and sustainable development. Students will explore how the EU formulates and implements its environmental strategies beyond its borders and what tools and policies it uses to promote global environmental protection. The course includes an analysis of EU climate diplomacy, the implementation of SDGs in foreign policy, and the environmental aspects of EU migration, trade, and development policies. Attention is also paid to critical reflection on the environmental dimension of enlargement policy and the EU's relations with strategic partners. This course thus helps students understand and explore the role of the European Union in environmental protection and contributes to raising awareness and interest in global environmental issues and sustainable development goals.
After completing the course, students will be able to: 1. Knowledge of EU policies and instruments: Understanding the mechanisms used by the EU to manage its external environmental policies. 2. Legislative knowledge: Knowledge of key environmental legislation and agreements adopted by the EU and the ability to assess their effectiveness and implementation. 3. Knowledge of international cooperation in the field of the environment: Understanding of the EU's cooperation with other international organizations and countries in the field of environmental protection and the ability to assess the effectiveness of such cooperation. 4. Analysis of political strategies: Ability to analyze EU political strategies and initiatives in the field of sustainable development and the environment and to assess their impact at the global level. 5. Intercultural and international competence: Ability to understand the relationships between the EU and other countries or regions in the field of environmental protection and ability to communicate and cooperate effectively in an international environment. 6. Critical thinking and policy evaluation: The ability to critically assess the successes, shortcomings, and challenges of EU environmental policies and suggest possible improvements. 7. Communication and presentation: The ability to communicate and present information on the EU's role in environmental protection effectively, both in writing and orally, in a professional and understandable manner to different target groups. 8. Ethical and social awareness: Understanding the ethical aspects of EU environmental policies and the ability to discuss the social implications of these policies.
