Course content
Seminars' topics: Theory of liberal democracy Non-democratic regimes Third wave of democracy, democratic transition and democratic consolidation Institutional design and democratic consolidation Elections and electoral systems and democratic consolidation Reconciliation with the past and democratic consolidation Political culture and democratization Economic growth, poverty and social inequality and democratization Democratization of supranational institutions Democratic deficit of the EU Citizens' participation in the EU political system

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the one-semester long course is to get students acquainted with the contemporary problems of democratic governance in the world. Attention will be oriented towards theory of democracy and contemporary varieties of democracy, the topics such as consolidation of democracy difficulties or democratization of supranational structures (case of EU) will be covered as well. The subject innovation has been supported by the project Support of Interdisciplinary studies and Study Programmes Innovations at Palacký University in Olomouc, CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0091.
Students who have completed this course should identify the main problems of democratization and democratic consolidation in the world and they should be able to analyze the possible solutions of these problems. The students will also get knowledge about the problem of democratization of supranational structures.
Prerequisites
The completion of this course is not conditioned upon completion of any other courses.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Obligatory attendance in seminars, active participation and successful final test result are required in order to receive colloquium. The student is required to work with the learning objects, which have been created for the concrete subject and are available for authorized students in LMS EDIS.
