Learning outcomes |
Public speaking and presentation skills are intrinsically linked to the study of law school and the later practice of law, as lawyers must be able to describe and present a legal problem clearly, as well as to present relevant arguments and respond to counter-arguments. Improving public speaking and presentation skills is the goal of the debate club.
Acquired competences (knowledge, skills, values): Participants of the debate club will deepen their public speaking skills, presentation skills, and the ability to respond promptly to arguments. Specific skills that will be practiced in the course: 1) Presentation Skills - preparing a focused presentation designed to increase knowledge, promote understanding, or encourage a change in audience attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors a. a clear and meaningful presentation structure that contributes to the coherence of the content b. imaginative and persuasive language adapted to the audience c. Persuasive and confident delivery including appropriate posture, gestures, eye contact and vocal delivery d. appropriate supporting material to enhance the persuasiveness of the presentation e. a persuasive and clear main message 2) Skill in value justification - taking one's own value positions within the context of society and legal-ethical issues to justify solutions and arguments a. understanding of different value approaches b. recognition of legal-ethical issues and their relationships c. applying value approaches to a specific legal-ethical problem while evaluating their implications d. taking a clear position on a value issue, including formulating objections and implications and defending or refuting value approaches 3) Feedback skills - the ability to evaluate the output of another and provide honest and objective comments a. identification of strengths and weaknesses of the output b. constructive feedback |
Prerequisites |
No course precondition. Enrolment in the course is by means of a selection procedure. Students answer a few questions about their previous debating and presenting experience and their motivation (google form). The course is open to 16 actively debating students and is open to others (passive participation, no credit). Due to the nature of the course, it is not possible to withdraw during the semester.
