The analysis of politics, ideology, propaganda and film reveals various aspects of political thinking and how we communicate past and current affairs- Many scholars consider cinema an integral part of modern demoracy age. Film has been used since its early days for poitical goals and the preferred narratives of historical events advocated or questioned traditional value, institutions and political discourses. The course focuses on the verbalisation and contextualisation of important plitical, economic and social themes in film and television, how ideology is enshrined in the text and its referential background. The interdisciplinary approach links politics, theory and film and shows the value of film for political theory and practice. Film will be analysed as an object of political culture and society. First, it explains the relationship between politics, propaganda and film. Second, it examines selected political, social and economic concepts on the assigned Czech and foreign films, which include feature films but also documenataries, animation and short film. It also analyses the film techniques used.
Students will enhance their critical thinking skills. They will be able to critically analyse film texts in their historical and political contexts, assess how film communicates events and ideas, how it tries to promote particular ideologies. Students will be able to apply some key social science concepts to cultural production Students will be able to identify and interpret political ideas in film texts, compare and analyse them, and apply the knowledge to current politics and governance in the Czech, European and global contexts.
