Course content
Basic concepts (the difference between an institution ? a residential facility, a short term care centre, etc.). Roles of institutions, historical excursion to Ancient Greece. Institutions during the period of the First Republic, real socialism. Alternatives to institutional care in today?s modern society. The rules and sanctions in institutions. Working with clients in institutions. Daily programmes. The risks of institutional care. Efficiency of institutional care.

Learning outcomes
Types of institutions of social care, forms of individual and group therapy, individual planning, integration of a client in the society, new approaches in EU countries.
The student is able to understand the system of institutional care by department, knows the historical development and current trends in institutional care, with an emphasis on individual client needs.
Prerequisites
General knowledge of history, sociology and civics at the secondary level.

Assessment methods and criteria

After completing the course, students should be able to describe and explain developments and new initiatives in institutional care, the possibility to compare the constitutional and unconstitutional treatment, give the pros and cons, to assess their effectiveness, describe and interpret specific institution such as territory, identifying the potential risk of residential care for clients and staff, describe, interpret and apply the rules for working with clients in residential care. Seminary work n given topic.
