The course builds on the courses Analysis and Theory of Politics and Comparison of Political Systems in Western Europe, Northern Europe and the USA. The aim is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the functioning of Western democratic regimes and the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. The course focuses on selected southern, central and eastern European countries. The course lectures are structured on a country-by-country basis, but always focus on those characteristics of the political system that are typical or unique to that country. Together with the study of the literature, they then give students not only a comprehensive knowledge of the selected political systems, but also the ability to understand their functioning and to compare the causes and consequences of the differences in the various parts of the political systems across the countries studied.
