Learning outcomes
The course aims to acquaint students with basic political science and security theories that deal with the issue of ethnic conflicts. Attention will be paid to ethnicity (basic definition of ethnicity, the origin of ethnicity, ethnicity and race, ethnicity and religion, ethnicity and nationalism), causes of ethnic conflicts in the contemporary world (concepts, structural factors, economic-social factors, cultural-perceptual factors) and peace processes, which led to the end of ethnic conflicts along with their consequences. The above-mentioned theories will then be applied to ethnic conflicts in the Balkans and the Middle East, which will be the focus of the course. These will include conflicts in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Lebanon, and Iraq.
