Students will learn about major existing explanatory models and how far they can go both in long-established theories (structural linguistics, generative grammar etc.) and in modern theories (quantitative linguistics etc.); the goal is to equip students with fundamental skills needed to build an explanatory rather than merely descriptive model to support a linguistic theory. The topics covered in the course include: overview of explanatory models, explanatory models used linguistics, functional explanation, criticism of explanatory models used in synergistic linguistics.
