Learning outcomes
The course teaches what is known as exile media, including their history, broadcasting, day-to-day operation as well as some exclusively exile-specific issues. It also covers the political conditions (the cold war), the way they shaped the stories that exile media covered and how they impacted journalists connected with them. As an example of such media, the course will turn to Radio Free Europe; RFE was one of the few media to cover the cold war era in its entirety and the only radio station to receive the status of "honorary member of the democratic opposition", i.e. opposition against the (communist) government-supported media). The backbone of the course will be discourse analysis of broadcast programmes by means of the information theory, the theory of communication, persuasion and propaganda. Among the analyzed material will be RFE coverage of conflicts of the two superpowers (the space race) and news reports on the reforms sprouting in places all over the Soviet satellite states (the Hungarian revolution of 1956, the Prague spring od 1968). RFE broadcasts will be viewed alongside broadcasts made at Československý rozhlas (the Czechoslovakia Radio Station) for comparison.
