Course content
First module: Antecedents to Cognitive Semiotics. -Uexk¨ull, Lotman, Sebeok -Semiotics and Phenomenology Second module: Naturalization of Semiotics. -What does it mean to naturalize a discipline? -The biosemiotic turn in semiotics Third module: Mental Phenomena Examined by Semiotics. -Symbolic species -Semiotic hierarchies Fourth module: Moving forward with CogSem. -Experimental semiotics

Learning outcomes
The student will become acquainted with the main points of the subdiscipline of cognitive semiotics, its background theories and context and the its general application. After the course students will be conversant in cognitive semiotics and will be able to research more specific areas related to the discipline individually.

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for the course, but a working knowledge of basic semiotic theory will be useful for those interested in cognitive semiotics. Lectures will be held in English, so knowledge of the language is an absolute must.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance, Dialog, Systematic Observation of Student

The evaluation of this course will be comprised of two paper presentations on a topic chosen by the student from the material studied throughout the seminar. The evaluation will take into account the accuracy of the concepts presented, the relevance of the chosen topic and the development of an argument from premises to conclusions. The papers and presentations will be worth 35% and 65% of the grade respectively.
