Course content
Saussurean programm under nowadays state of knowledge; (Proto-)Indo-European as common sys­temic potential, Indo-European languages as individual cases of systemic actualization; Indo-European context of Balto-Slavic languages, Baltic languages as the nearest alternative to the Slavic ones, Balts as object of linguistic archaeology, and Baltic languages as historical-cultural phenomena.

Learning outcomes
A functional-structural approach to Indo-European philology, the Baltic languages, Lithuanian and Latvian, serving as case-study materials.
What the student will carry away of the teacher's objectives as exposed under 1, depends mostly on his own work and capacity, and constitutes his own both human and scholarly value.
Prerequisites
Thinking in a strongly systematic way; any previous philological experience will be of much use.
